Confluence of European Waterbodies 2024

Bringing the Rhine to Venice Lagoon

Water is vital for all life on Earth, yet their voice is rarely heard in political decision-making. Born out of growing water challenges and demands for water democracy worldwide, the Confluence of European Water Bodies sprang from a collective pursuit of a deeper understanding of ‘Rights of Nature’ in Europe, from a cultural perspective. Formed by over 25 grassroots communities of artists, activists, lawyers, and ecologists, representing seas, lakes, rivers, lagoons, and glaciers from all over Europe, this growing community of care and concern aims to foster new dialogues and relationships with water. As a learning system for water diplomacy, new strategies for effective representation of water in Europe’s cultural, legal, and political realm are being explored, rehearsed, and advocated.

Joining the second edition of the Confluence, held in Venice Lagoon, I attended on behalf of the Rhine River. Meeting all other waterbodies and hearing their stories, sharing precious moments, and strategizing together, I enjoyed being immersed in the watery reality of Venice. The 4-day intensive programme included a grief circle by Maria Lucia Cruz Correia, an exchange and discussion with the local community members, several moments of ritualistic nature, and a symposium on the rights of nature movement.

I brought one of the handmade glass shells as an offering to The Diplomatic Suitcase, a collection of objects and watersamples from each of the 35 waterbodies, brought together in a small format to be exhibited around Europe.

Rhine River is added to the website of the Confluence of European Water Bodies.
